Koninklijke Harmonie van Peer vzw.
Our main orchestra and youth orchestra are in full preparation for their participation to the “World Music Contest 2009”. In this journal all news and activities are reported that are related to our participation to this magnificent event in Kerkrade. On a regular base news postings, photographs and videos will be published, keeping you up to date on rehearsals, team building weekends, preparatory concerts and, of course, our activities and results at the WMC2009 itself.
Read, look, listen and enjoy the unique WMC ambiance.

On Friday June 26th the main orchestra concentrated on ‘Las Hijas de Eris’, the musical epic that will conclude our WMC performance on July 26th.
At the moment this work will be performed at the WMC, our audience will experience a cross-over of several art forms, with music as the beating heart. A movie, paintings, dance, literature and music will combine to a unique experience.
In the video you will find an interview with our conductor ‘Alex Schillings’, since 4 years the inspiring guide of the main orchestra

29/06/09 The main orchestra intensively rehearses ‘Las Hijas de Eris’

In the weekend of June 27th and 28th the youth orchestra of the Royal Concert Band of Peer started its final sprint to the WMC participation on Saturday July 18th. Conductor Peter Cools and his 101 pupils went on seclusion to the monastery of Vaalbeek, near Leuven. The goal: increasing the musical quality even more by 2 days of intensive rehearsals. The introductory work ‘Rushmore’ was studied and the obligatory work ‘Invocation and Toccata’ was polished up.
Obviously there was also a lot of time to relax and create a great team spirit. Our quiz ‘the smartest musician of the world’ resulted in a prove that all our musicians are incredibly smart and on Sunday afternoon the ‘Peter against all’ game resulted in a hilarious end of a marvelous weekend.
Need a prove? Check the video.

Concerts
On Thursday July 9th the Royal Concert Band of Peer is organising an exclusive concert. At this moment the “National Band of New Zealand” is travelling from Bangkok, via Dubai to Frankfurt. Final destination: The World Championship for brass bands, a part of the World Music Contest in Kerkrade. In 2005 the New Zealand musicians performed at the WMC as well, resulting in a terrific 3rd place in the prestigious brass band concert division. This year’s weekend of July 11th they compete for no less than the title of World Champion.

As to their preparation for the WMC 2009 they perform on only one other European stage; the Royal Concert Band of Peer was given the honour to host our New Zealand colleagues. On Thursday July 9th at 8 pm the National Band of New Zealand will give a concert in our concert Hall in Peer. They will be joined by our youth orchestra, performing their WMC program. For only 5 euro you can listen to both orchestras, Belgian youth and our honourable guests from New Zealand. Belgium and New Zealand, countries situated at each others ‘other side of the world’, now reunited on stage.
Please use also a colour mark to indicate Saturday July 11th in your agenda. That day the youth orchestra and the main orchestra of the Royal Concert Band of Peer will present their musical WMC program to their fans. At 8 pm the youth orchestra takes off, one hour later followed by the main orchestra. Price: only 5 euro. Place to be: ‘CC Poorthuis’ in Peer.
To conclude this weekend’s activities the main orchestra will perform in the city of Roermond in the Netherlands. Being invited by the Concert Band ‘Concordia Melick’, we will participate to their Concert days. On Sunday July 12th at 5,30 pm the main orchestra of the Royal Concert Band of Peer will perform for the first time in Roermond’s prestigious concert hall ‘de Oranjerie’.

This week 250 WMC posters are distributed across shops, restaurants and pubs in Peer. At least as impressive is the distribution of a WMC information brochure to the 6000 houses in the city of Peer. The Royal Music Band of Peer is going to the World Music Contest, a unique and prestigious event, and this way we keep our fellow citizens informed on what it's all about, how they can support our efforts, to invite them for our preparatory concerts etc. You could think that the Belgian postal services are helping us? Nothing is less true; it are our own musicians, assisted by some volunteers and the board of governors that perform this labor intensive task. They walk from door to door to inform Peer on what's coming up.
The 'Kerkrade-feeling' has always been very strong in Peer, this year even more than ever. The reason is 'Pieter Bruegel the Elder', the famous painter indeed. He's the red thread throughout our WMC preparation and performances and ... it has now conclusively been proven that Bruegel was born in Peer. What's more ... one of the works that will be performed by the main orchestra is based on 'The Procession to Calvary', one of Bruegel's famous paintings ... translated to music by Kevin Houben, also born in Peer.
Kerkrade, here Peer comes.

09/07/2009 WMC information campaign in the city of Peer

On July 9th a very special concert was organized in the concert hall of the Royal Concert band of Peer. Our youth orchestra performed for the first time its complete program for the World Music Contest in Kerkrade. After weeks of intensive rehearsals in small and large groups, this was the first important test with audience. Stress was ruling, but our young musicians performed really well. The way they played the introduction, obligatory work and work of choice was really convincing.
After the youth orchestra the National Band of New Zealand took the stage. After their superb concert four years ago, the Royal Concert Band of Peer was very honored to again host this magnificent orchestra. From on the start of their performance it became rapidly clear that this band will participate in the prestigious concert division at the WMC in Kerkrade! Magnificent sounds filled the concert hall; music to touch your soul. Some parts of their performance can be downloaded using the following links.
After the concert the New Zealand and Peer musicians joined in brotherhood … of course with some Belgian beers to celebrate this great moment.

13/07/2009 Welcome to our special WMC supporters guest book
Yesterday was again a beautiful day for our society. Het ‘Poorthuis’, the cultural centre in Peer, was the setting for our last hometown concert before the youth orchestra and main orchestra perform at the World Music Contest in Kerkrade. The concert hall was changed to a special configuration. Nowadays the number of musicians is so large, that neither of both orchestras fits on the normal stage. The solution: Accompanied by a part of the audience the orchestras sat where normally all the audience is sitting, while the remainder of the audience sat on the stage; I can guarantee you that the latter audience was not only enthusiastic about the music, but the view from stage on both orchestras was beautiful as well. A full house, two orchestras and their conductors in top shape … the spectacle could start.
13/07/2009 The beauty of music
First in line was the youth orchestra. After a short and warm welcome by Tjeu Soors, the youth orchestra started their program with ‘Rushmore’, a tribute to the rock carved statue of 4 American presidents; while Rushmore was played you could see right in front of you the statues and the monumental power of the rock face. Than ‘Invocation and Toccata’; an obligatory contest work is not always a fascinating composition, so it is an art to make it nevertheless a wonderful experience for the audience. This art was wonderfully mastered by Peter Cools and his musicians. The youth orchestra concluded with their masterpiece … ‘Man in the Ice’ is based on the reconstructed life story of Ötzi, the ice mummy.
After a thirst-quenching break the main orchestra took power on stage, with Pieter Bruegel the Elder as their esteemed guest. As conductor Alex Schillings clarified, the orchestra choose for a concert in two parts, a Belgian and a Spanish one.
As a starter the Belgian part opened with ‘Ouverture Joyeuse’, a frivolous play of sounds serving as prologue and successful appetizer for what’s still to come. After an airy opener, up to the more heavy work. As a first piece of choice the main orchestra choose for ‘Procession to Calvary’. Composer Kevin Houben, born in Peer and former trumpet player of the main orchestra, was inspired by the beautiful painting ‘the Procession to Calvary’ of Pieter Bruegel the Elder. Jezus, loaded with the heavy cross of his upcoming death, his body bent and broken, dragging himself and his cross to the top of the Calvary mountain … It are shocking images. Bruegel translated this drama to a beautiful painting, Kevin translated it to magnificent pictorial music. The lamentation of the fagot represents the suffering Christ, the musical lines paint the grueling journey, this all cross woven by seven nails penetrating the Christ’s body. At the end everything meets the inevitable … His dead.
The Spanish part took off with the WMC obligatory work ‘Vientos’, or in other words ‘the winds’. Whirling music indeed. The interpretation of conductor Alex Schillings and his musicians is appealing; the battering winds in the Spanish sierra’s, suddenly making space for the peace of a merely sigh of wind, that on its turn swells gradually to a heavy storm with sand swirling up from the dry wasteland; seeking shelter was almost a necessity. And the ultimate award was still to come. After a real move of chairs, instruments and musicians, ‘Las Hijas de Eris’ could take its start. The tension between the lethal and destructive war and the suffering caused by its insanity, could be felt throughout the performance. When you closed your eyes and listened, you could see the battle in front of your eyes; chopping, saving no one and nothing, supported by the roar of artillery and its strokes; and than … there is the suffering person, the lonely cello and the harp and piano as its companions, they want it to come to an end, the pointless suffering. The armies still want to rule, but nevertheless end their battle. We have suffered enough, the cello ending in loneliness.
Two magnificent orchestras, two beautiful musical programs, two superb concerts on one evening; magic and enjoyment from the first till the last note. Many thanks to musicians and conductors for this masterpiece.
And not to forget: this time we didn’t ask a ‘real’ presenter; we asked both conductors to tell themselves about the music to come. I learned at least one thing: Peter as well as Alex are not only superb conductors; they’re also talented people as to “how to entertain audience by verbal and facial expression”. Does someone need presenters?
And to conclude: Many thanks to our hard workers behind the scene and to you, our magnificent audience. Together with both orchestras you made this a fantastic evening. Greetings to you all.

When the orchestra played this magnificent work, you could see, almost touch Ötzi. You heard the cracking of the ice under his feet and how the ice finally won and took Ötzi’s body. Music you can see … again a superb performance of the youthful musicians and their guide, Peter Cools. It was Peter’s last hometown concert … we’re going to miss him enormously. Peter, many, many thanks for the beautiful work you did for us and the music you planted in the hearts of many young musicians.

Rehearsals at full speed
From July 3rd till 5th the musicians of the main orchestra came together for a weekend full of rehearsals. In large as well as small groups the different music scores were studied intensively; full concentration was required.
This week the youth orchestra is rehearsing every day. Guided and inspired by conductor Peter Cools, small groups of musicians study the final details, at the end brought together in the magnificent sound of the youth orchestra.
Last week was probably the most busy week of the last 4 years. On July 11th we had the joined hometown concert of youth orchestra and main orchestra; a report can be found underneath this blog. The day after the 115 musicians of the main orchestra traveled to concert hall ‘de Oranjerie’ in Roermond. Their they performed in the framework of two days of ‘WMC tryout concerts’, organized by our friends of concert band Concordia of Melick. The main orchestra of the Royal Concert Band of Peer was one of the many participants; the WMC program was successfully performed in a magnificent concert hall.
From Monday till today our own concert hall in Peer was a continuous hive of people. Every room, from the big hall up to the museum, was continuously filled with groups of musicians of youth and main orchestra. Also several rooms in the adjacent cultural centre were taken in possession. Participating to the WMC with two orchestras requires a brilliant organization.
Last week youth orchestra conductor Peter Cools was spotted at least 10 hours a day preparing his young musicians for their contest on July 18th. Main orchestra conductor Alex Schillings shuttled almost every day from his hometown in the Netherlands to his musical haven in Peer.
Besides from the many rehearsals, also the ‘work behind the scenes’ intensified. The WMC folder was finalized and ‘the Bruegel-experience’ was worked out in detail: dance, literature, photography, movie and music will be brought together in one magnificent spectacle. In the movie Pieter Bruegel himself will be joined by some musicians and a conductor. Recording has just been completed; some scene shots are given below.
17/07/2009 Busy, busy, busy ...
Today at 11.40 h. am the youth orchestra participates to the World Music Contest in the ‘Parkstad theatre’ in Kerkrade. After a successful and final rehearsal, the 101 musicians – with an average age of 15 years – will give their best on this world stage.
It will become a very emotional day for the musicians and their conductor.
After 18 years of successful mentorship, conductor Peter Cools will say goodbye to his beloved orchestra. He taught our young musicians how to play ‘together’ and guided them to continuous improvement of their musical capabilities. Fun and serious matters went hand in hand. Those who have played in Peter’s orchestra exactly know what we mean.
Supporters, sympathizers and the board wish Peter and his musicians a lot of success on the WMC stage.
18/07/2009 Thumbs up for the youth orchestra
2009, July 18th: The Royal Concert Band of Peer celebrates a glorious day. After months of rehearsals and tons of sweat, 101 young musicians performed once more under guidance of Peter Cools. In utmost concentration they entered the stage. The goal: a beautiful farewell present for a conductor that guided the youth orchestra to what it is today: an orchestra belonging to the top of the world. It became a present without precedent; all musicians raise to their top level and gave Peter what he never had dreamed of:

Goosebumps!
Emotion!
Passion!
Tears!
19/07/2009 Phenomenal: The youth orchestra, conducted by Peter Cools, scores 90,00% !
From on tomorrow some fragments of the jury reports will be shown on this webpage.
After a long standing ovation (of the audience and his musicians) the musicians traveled back to Peer where a real authentic Belgian chips (‘Belgische frieten’) stall was awaiting them.
In the evening a small delegation, a camera crew included, traveled back to Kerkrade for the proclamation. Meanwhile more than 100 musicians, parents and sympathizers were waiting the verdict in our concert hall in Peer. Stress was raining. The delegation would not communicate with the home port; the integral proclamation would be projected upon arrival in Peer. That way it remained thrilling for everyone. Delirious scenes and an incredible happiness overwhelmed conductor, musicians, their parents and the supporting crew when a magic 90% appeared on the screen.
At this moment our youth orchestra is virtual World Champion in 3rd division harmony band. The present ranking is as follows:
1. Youth Orchestra of the Royal Concert Band of Peer - Peer, Belgium 90.00
2. Banda de S. Cristóvão de Rio Tinto - Rio Tinto, Portugal 84.18

26/07/2009 Thumbs up for the main orchestra!

This evening at 20.30 pm the main orchestra, conducted by Alex Schillings, will perform in concert division, the highest division at the World Music Contest in Kerkrade. With this contest in mind conductor Alex Schillings engaged in 2005 to work on the sound and musicality of the orchestra. The final preparations started more than a year ago and last month the intensity of rehearsals and scene preparations reached a peak level. On some days group rehearsals started at 8 in the morning; on other days rehearsals continued till after midnight.
To say it with the facebook words of one of our musicians:
“The WMC is like top sport: you exercise every day, again and again; you’re drilled, you move your borders, you suffer and have to watch your health, with only one goal in mind: to give everything of yourself for some minutes every 4 years.”
This evening it’s D-Day, our moment in Kerkrade. Many thanks for turning your thumbs up.
You can listen to our performance at the website of L1: www.l1.nl.
24/07/2009 Video proclamation youth orchestra
Only a limited delegation of the youth orchestra went to the proclamation at the WMC in Kerkrade. The other musicians and supporters waited for the verdict in our own concert hall in Peer. No communication until the representation arrived back in Peer; but once they arrived … the following video was shown.
25/07/2009 Tomorrow the main orchestra exhibits a cross media performance
In function of its WMC performance tomorrow at 8.30 pm in the Roda Concert Hall in Kerkrade, the main orchestra and its conductor Alex Schillings composed a spectacular program.
Paintings, movie, literature, dance and photography will support a magnificent musical epic. In a cross media performance the main orchestra will give the best of itself. In the centre of this story is Pieter Bruegel the Elder, an ancient painter born in Peer. His paintings are the red thread in a story that meets joy, sorrow, the horror of war and the worldwide battle for power. A concert with a clear political and economic message that can not be misunderstood thanks to the message of several art forms.

The Dutch war photographer Geert van Kesteren supported the Royal Concert Band of Peer by allowing us to use some of his photographs. Geert won the “ICP infinity award in photojournalism 2009”, the highest recognition for photography in the USA.
Geert van Kesteren visited Iraq several times, where he made striking and moving photographs. These photographs were brought together in 2 books. More information can be found at www.baghdadcalling.nl and www.whymisterwhy.com.
Our WMC performance will also include the worldwide premiere of “Procession to Calvary”, a beautiful new work of Kevin Houben. Kevin, born in Peer and former trumpet player of our main orchestra, was inspired by the mighty painting “Procession to Calvary” of Pieter Bruegel the Elder. An impressive homage to this ancient painter, of which recent research has proven that also he was born in Peer.
To conclude our performance, the main orchestra will play “Las Hijas de Eris”, an impressive work for two orchestras and a quintet of cello, harp, piano and percussion. It will be the 2nd performance ever of this work.
You can listen live to the performance of the main orchestra at www.nl1.nl. On the home page click “Luister L1 radio”.
26/07/2009 The main orchestra touches souls
Sunday evening, 20.30 pm, the great moment had finally arrived. After a very intense period of preparations the main orchestra took stage at the World Music Contest 2009. They participated for the 5th time in a row, the 2nd time in concert division, the highest contest level.
A stage team of 20 volunteers did set up the stage while the audience was entertained with some cinematic previous on the concert. Chairs, music stands, percussion instruments and some eye catching scene attributes (among which a giant self portrait of Pieter Bruegel) were set on stage: the performance could start at exactly 20.30 pm.
Some stress reigned among the musicians, yet as from on the first note the warm sounds of the orchestra, conducted by Alex Schillings, filled the Roda Concert Hall. “Ouverture Joyeuse” was performed with lots of bravado, translating Pieter bruegel’s painting ‘The Peasant Wedding’ to music. Meanwhile the painting was projected on large video screens.
Next to come was the very difficult and obligatory work “Vientos”. Conductor Alex Schillings and his musicians surprised the audience with a magnificent interpretation, being the subject of many conversations afterwards.
The best was kept for the last: the performance of “Las Hijas de Eris”. An impressive epic about war, power and oil. For a while the musicians left stage; meanwhile the stage team changed the setting. Afterwards 2 orchestras and a small ensemble of percussion, piano, harp and cello took stage. They would fight an impressive musical battle for 20 minutes.

A first climax was reached upon performance of “Procession to Calvary”, composed by Kevin Houben, born in Peer. This musical work was specially written for the main orchestra and is based on Pieter Bruegel’s painting “Procession to Calvary”. The Peer musicians clearly enjoyed the beautiful notes and themes. On their faces you could see that the musicians gave the best of themselves, from the scenes with the playing children, to the suffering Christ and his journey to Calvary mountain.

Cello soloist Rebecca Smith was dressed as ‘Mad Mag’, Pieter Bruegel’s personification of war and violence. During the performance the painting ‘Mad Mag’ and photographs of the Dutch war photographer ‘Geert van Kesteren’ were projected on the video screens. The audience was startled by images and speeches of dictators and world leaders from the past. In the last minutes of the performance dancers Dayna Martinez Morales and Franciska Rijken expressed the dilemma between violence and the suffering it creates. Percussion symbolized anger and battle by beating oil vessels at a frightening rhythm. The orchestra lay its passion and soul in this magnificent, unforgettable piece of modern music.
The performance touched the soul of our audience. Tears of emotion expressed the feelings of many people.
This year the main orchestra participated to the WMC with a very daring and renewing performance. The other art forms had a purely supporting role and enhanced the willful choices we made in the musical program. Only where the conductor’s score explicitly mentioned some ‘extra’s’, additional art forms came on the forefront, as are e.g. the video projection of dictators and world leaders, the explosion and the oil barrel beating. It was a real and complete ‘exhibition’ on stage.
Afterwards musicians and conductor were rightly proud about their performance. The ‘complete experience’ was rewarded with a standing ovation of the audience and a jury score of 91.27%.
After the evening of 2009 July 26th the preliminary ranking in concert division is as follows:
1. Koninklijk Bevers Harmonieorkest - Beveren-Leie, Belgium 93.57
2. Sociedad Musical La Artistica Manisense - Manises, Spain 93.02
3. Harmonieorkest v/d Koninklijke Harmonie van Peer - Peer, Belgium 91.27

12. Musikkforeningen Nidarholm - Trondheim, Norway 85.38
Tomorrow we will add some video fragments to this site.
This weekend 5 additional orchestras performed in 3rd division, in which our youth orchestra participated on July 18th. None of these 5 orchestras succeeded in beating the performance of the young Peer musicians. The youth orchestra is still virtual world champion; still 4 orchestras to go on August 1st.
1. Jeugdorkest Koninklijke Harmonie Van Peer - Peer, Belgium 90.00

26/07/2009 Video’s of the WMC performance of the main orchestra
Here you can find some parts out of our WMC performance of “Procession to Calvary” and “Las Hijas de Eris”.
Procession to Calvary:
“The second highlight was from the hand of the Belgian Royal Concert Band of Peer. They performed at a totally different level. Their concert was a complete experience: purely original music, in its totality supported by live images and everything subjected to one theme: Pieter Bruegel the Elder, born in Peer. Clever guys these Belgians; they did not come to the WMC for only a tune. When you complement the previous with the superior technical level of this orchestra and the competent, expressive guidance of their conductor, Alex Schillings, you know it’ll be great”.

Las Hijas de Eris
Interview with Alex Schillings, some minutes after the performance.
Some minutes after our performance, a reporter of radio L1 (www.l1.nl) asked Alex Schillings for a live interview.
